Rankings on rankings on rankings
Tomorrow I am planning to do a MIVA tournament preview. I had the model play through the MIVA tournament 50,000 times to see who is most likely to make each stage and eventually win. But more on that tomorrow.
The latest AVCA Coaches’ Poll came out yesterday and all 15 teams stayed in the poll. It’s not all that surprising that opinions are well formed by this point in the season. We have over 700 matches worth of data to form these opinions. Looking at the coaches’ poll this year, it looks highly unlikely that a new team will rise into the ranks of the top 4.
I also wanted to do a quick side-by-side comparison of some different rankings. We just talked about the AVCA Coaches’ Poll above, so I put that alongside the Off The Block Media Poll (4/4/23)1, RPI, and VBelo. I also added an average of all of those rankings. Since small numbers are better rankings, the lower the average the better.
The top teams seem secure but teams 5 through 8 are tightly grouped. When we get to Pepperdine and Stanford at the end of the chart, it feels like a number of teams not on this chart could contend for those spots. Particularly Ohio State and Loyola. Of these rankings, RPI and VBelo are the only ones that rank every team, so we can’t fully see where all of these teams would land.
