Let’s start with the matches that weren’t played on an island. The big upset came in the form of CSU Northridge sweeping Stanford at Maples Pavilion. The Matadors played a great all-around match and came away with a fantastic non-conference win for the Big West. Lewis also fended off McKendree in a reverse sweep. I’m sure the Bearcats would like to have that one back. Grand Canyon was able to bounce back after their first loss of the year by defeating BYU in straight sets. The Lopes are 15-1 and yet they are not getting the attention they so deserve.
Now let’s head to the island. In what can only be described as a show of sheer force, Hawai’i swept Pepperdine in front of almost 7,000 fans. This was the first time Pepperdine has been swept this year and the Waves maintain their winless streak in Hawaii that dates back to January of 2009. Jaylen Jasper was very un-Jasper-y with only 11 kills and a mere .227 hitting percentage. Apparently he is human, but I am not fully convinced. For Hawai’i everything seemed to be working. They out-aced (6-1), out-blocked (11-5), and out-hit (.405-.260) Pepperdine. In Set 3, Hawai’i had a sideout percentage of 90% (19-21) against a legitimate contender to make the national tournament. This was some high level volleyball!
With less than 15 matches, today is a calm Saturday of volleyball. There are still great matches though. In the MIVA, Loyola looks to stay undefeated in conference play against a constantly underestimated Purdue Fort Wayne. There is also a ton of non-conference play. Stanford will definitely want a win after being upset yesterday, but they will have to go through the dangerous UC Irvine.
If you are looking for some potentially close matchups, we have 3 that VBelo has as toss ups. Honestly, all of these matches could be really fun to watch and are worth your time.
