VBelo Scouting Report: March 02, 2023
Hawai'i is still undefeated and Jaylen Jasper is still incredible
In potentially their toughest match of the season, Hawai’i was able to defeat Pepperdine in 4 sets. Jaylen Jasper continues to pad his resume for Player of the Year with another unreal performance. He had 26 kills while hitting .468. That is impressive in and of itself. But it is even more impressive because every person on the court (and probably in the building) knows that he is going to get set constantly and yet he can’t be stopped. At best you can slow him down momentarily. To say that he is Pepperdine’s offensive is pretty close to the truth. In yesterday’s match, he had 47 of the 110 attacks (43%).
On the other side of the net, Hawai’i hit .410 (against a team who gives up a ton of kills). Jakob Thelle returned to the court after being held out since February 11th against Stanford. It was not a flawless performance (with a few miscommunications), but it was good enough for 42 assists and the win. Luckily for us, we get to see these two teams go at it again on Friday.
In unsurprising news, UCLA is still very good. In their sweep of Concordia, they committed only 6 total hitting errors and dominated the blocking game 10-0. We should expect nothing less at this point.
Oddly, there are only 2 matches today. Thursdays normally have a handful of matches but this is just what happens when the stars align. In the MIVA, we have Quincy, coming off of their win against Milwaukee School of Engineering yesterday. They will take on Lindenwood, the talk of the town after knocking off Ohio State last weekend. In Banner Elk, NC, Lees-McRae will be looking for their first win against Queens. They are 0-10 all-time, including their first match of the 2023 season. The Bobcats have had flashes of brilliance this season. Will today be the day the streak is snapped?
