That’s right, the coaches have picked a new #1. In yesterday’s AVCA poll, the Grand Canyon Antelopes snuck past Long Beach to become the newest #1 program in the nation. Even more exciting, this is the first time they have achieved this honor. This is incredibly exciting for such a relatively young program.
Here is a breakdown of how many points the school received in the latest poll.
The top is tightly contested so I wouldn’t be shocked to see some movement in the coming weeks. For all of those keeping track, the “Nifty Nine” has not been broken yet.
In terms of VBelo, Grand Canyon is the most improved team of the year so far. Their rise this season has been nothing short of impressive. I promise the VBelo rankings are coming soon, but I will give you a little sneak peek. GCU may be the AVCA number one, but they have not yet raised to the ranking in VBelo. In fact, right now they are not even in the top three. They are a great team, don’t get me wrong. But the model doesn’t think they are at the top just yet.
I can’t wait to see how the season continues to play out as GCU continues to prove to the world (and the VBelo model) how great they truly are.
