5 - Conference battles are heating up across the country. That being said, there are still 5 teams that are undefeated in conference. Hawaii is sitting at 6-0 in the Big West, two games ahead of Long Beach. Penn State (8-0) also has a 2 game lead over the second place team (GMU) in the EIVA. Over in the GLVC, Maryville is putting on a show going 10-0 in conference. Lincoln Memorial, IVA Goliath, is 3-0, but it should be pointed out that the IVA does standings a little different. Lastly, Fort Valley State (6-0) has already locked up the top spot in the SIAC.

Volleyball gets a holiday.

Number of the Day

1 - If there is one thing I care about in this world, it is trying to watch all of the Oscar nominated movies. That’s not important. But if there is one thing related to volleyball that I care about, it might be triple-doubles. They are great and have basically gone extinct. That being said, we were so close yesterday! Tread Rosenthal (Hawaii) finished with 53 assists, 10 digs, and 9 kills. The world was 1 kill shy of witnessing a triple-double! I am very sad that it did not happen and can only hope that we get to see one before the season ends.

0 - We made it all the way to April with an undefeated team, but no longer. Pepperdine defeated UCLA in Malibu 3-2 and now there are 0 undefeated teams. This may feel like a major upset, but I would say it was fairly unlikely. Pepperdine had a 31% chance of winning this match. Here is a fun example: the earth is about 30% land and 70% water. If you picked a random spot on the globe and it was land, that would happen about as much as Pepperdine defeating UCLA yesterday. In terms of VBelo, Pepperdine and UCLA exchanged 17 elo points, which is not a huge amount. The rematch on Saturday should be great, but first, we get VBelo #2 (Hawaii) and #4 (UC Irvine), with the Anteaters getting the edge because of home court and travel. April volleyball!

Over in the MIVA, Ball state is focused on getting that top seed and securing home court advantage for their conference tournament. The Cardinals’ path has many options currently. Most importantly if they win their last 3 matches, they will be the #1 seed. Their fate is in their hands. There are a lot of chaos scenarios, including a three-way tie. Regardless, the regular season finale between Ball State and Loyola should be on your calendar (for April 11th). It’s going to be a great one.

3 - This past weekend, for the 3rd straight year, the Fort Valley State Wildcats claimed the SIAC regular season title. They will enter the postseason as the #1 seed in their conference tournament as they seek to return to the NCAA tournament. Right now, VBelo has them as the #28 team in the country, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a spot in the big dance. All it takes is a team to underestimate an underdog for a major upset to happen.

This past weekend he set a program record for the most aces in a season. Now is a goodtime to remind you that it is still March! His 51 aces leads the nation by a healthy margin (second place has 39 aces.) His .710 aces per set also leads the nation. So yeah, the guy is dangerous from the serving line.

24 - Home court isn’t a magic wand, but it sure helps. In some cases, the home court advantage rises to the level of legend. One of those legends is the Smith Field House, home court of the BYU Cougars. This 5,000 seat arena opened in 1951, but volleyball did not move there until 1990. Many teams have struggled here, including MPSF rivals the Pepperdine Waves. For the first time in 24 years, Pepperdine took two straight matches in the Smith Field House. Pepperdine is currently 8-0 in the MPSF and sits 1/2 game ahead of UCLA at 7-0.

To be fair, all of the teams had very reasonable odds of winning, so it’s not a huge surprise. So far this season over 25% of MIVA matches have been won by the team with lower odds. This is madness. I love it.

According to reports, the NCAA makes over a billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) during March Madness. Anyways, there are 6 schools with men’s volleyball programs that made the men’s basketball tournament. After the first two rounds, all 6 teams have been eliminated and have a combined record of 1-6, with UCLA getting the only win. I, for one, am thrilled to see how much of the $1 Billion they spend on the men’s volleyball tournament.

Missouri S&T hit an unreal .667 against Jamestown on March 21st. The Miners finished the match with 43 kills, 60 attacks, and only 3 errors. In case you think this is a fluke, Missouri S&T also has the 3rd highest single-match hitting percentage at .610 on February 12th. Those Miners know a thing or two about efficiency.
